66 Year Old Woman Gives Birth

A 66 year-old woman from Bucharest Romania has given birth by caesarean section to a 3.19 pound baby girl on Sunday. The newborn's twin sister was stillborn. The infant who is 6 weeks premature being monitored in the premature intensive care unit but is breathing on her own, doctors say.

After being treated for infertility for nine years and undergoing procedures to reverse the effects of menopause, Adriana Iliescu was successfully artificially inseminated on the first attempt. The 66-year-old was originally carrying triplets but lost the third fetus in her first trimester.

A spokesperson for the hospital stated, “the mother is doing well - she is saying she has been given a new lease of life."

Iliescu has become the world's oldest recorded woman to give birth.

Doctors report that mother and daughter are doing well and should be able to go home within the next couple of weeks.
