NOTE: The following is a letter to the editor from Premier Rodney MacDonald.
June 11, 2007
Letter to the Editor:
Federal Finance Jim Minister Flaherty says in Saturday's Herald that it is an "urban myth" that the federal government's 2007 Budget affects the 2005 Atlantic Accord. In fact, that budget claws back every cent of the initial $830-million accord payment, and more, by giving us lower Equalization payments than we're entitled to receive. How does the 2007 Budget do that? Mr. Flaherty says it's "complex" and that's the only part of his letter to the Herald that I agree with. Mr. Flaherty talks about a choice between two formulas. On the surface, having a choice sounds reasonable. In fact, it's not reasonable. Let me give you an analogy that explains why.

Just one day after Nova Scotia Premier Rodney MacDonald finally came to his senses and realized that Ottawa is intent on breaking the Atlantic Accord Agreement signed in 2005, Prime Minister Stephen Harper told reporters in a news conference today in Ottawa that if Nova Scotia is serious about the allegations, they should take legal action adding with a dismissive chuckle, "I don't think you can make that allegation and walk away. Is the federal government breaking the law? We are not breaking the law".

Premier Rodney MacDonald is calling on Nova Scotia's members of parliament to vote against federal budget legislation on third reading. He is also calling on senators to delay passage of the bill if comes before them. The 2007 federal budget effectively cancels the Atlantic accord. |

Bill Casey for premier. It’s not that far of a stretch. In speaking with a die hard 40-year Tory supporter, he says: “I expect the Tories to lose the next election, boot Rodney out, (or have him resign for the usual ‘personal reasons’) and then make a strong bid to have Bill Casey head the Tories.
Would, given the state of things, anyone even bother to run against Casey if such a scenario took place? In this whole ‘Casey and the Accord Affair’ what I find amazing is not what Bill Casey did, but what the others didn’t do. |

During the 2000 municipal elections, a fast ferry from Bedford to Halifax was proposed by then mayor, Walter Fitzgerald. It wouldn't float in 2000, so why is it making like a turd in Halifax harbour and floating now? Bedford Ferry Not a Very Good Idea: Expert -From the Daily News, September 02, 2000 Walter Fitzgerald's Opposition to Commuter Rail Produces Unworkable Alternative Proposal Mayor Walter Fitzgerald's idea for a ferry from Bedford to Halifax is just a political "red herring," says a transportation expert who doesn't think the idea will float. "If money is poured into a ferry, it's going to be a complete waste of time," Larry Hughes, a Dalhousie professor and transportation activist, said yesterday. |

A Ghost in need is a Ghost indeed. Haligonians worried about abandoned or neglected local ghosts will be happy to read that the Rescue Mediums, aka Jackie Dennison and Christine Hamlett, are hard at work rectifying the problem. This week, the British pair will be attempting to encourage spirits at 5562 Bloomfield Street in the North End of Halifax to leg it toward the nearest bright light they can find. |

HRM’S all-news and talk radio station, 95.7 took a big hit in the credibility department on Wednesday May 16. It seems that 95.7 will give you the news, the breaking news, and Team coverage of news, as long as it doesn’t involve one of their own staff. As I see it, if you live by the sword then you die by it. CJNI Radio, known as News95.7 in Metro does news. They do tons of news, and do it well. They start at 5:30 in the morning and deliver tons of news for most of the day. They have several key news wheels (5:30-9:00am and 3:30-7pm.) |

ALSO: Did you know Global TV launched a news package at 11pm? A. J. Walling has something to say about it!
This is the third attempt at a SEASIDE-FM fundraiser. I hope this one will work. For those not in the know, Seaside FM is the community radio station (94.7) that is located in Eastern Passage and broadcast to parts of metro. They are nearly five years old and that by itself is a major accomplishment. |

So, here's the scoop on David Rodenhiser and his radio gig. David is very happy at the Daily News writing columns. That's a relief. Rodenhiser is at the top of his game with pen in hand. David tells me that he loves writing columns, and says he has one of the best jobs in metro's media. But what about the 'Rat's' radio career? |

Yes, it's true, Halifax would have been in the World Class club. This news just makes Halifax look like the city of fools the Beatles sang about all those years ago. From The Herald in Scotland, the stunning truth. Forget the 2014 Commonwealth Games bid by Glasgow and Abuja - Halifax would have won outright on the first vote. That astonishing claim was made yesterday by a member of the executive board of the Commonwealth Games Federation at their meeting in London. |
