The Conservatives concede a Stephen Harper government would raise the rate on the lowest tax bracket back from 15 per cent back to 16 per cent in their first budget, probably in April. As well, the basic exemption, income on which no tax is charged, would be dropped by $400 in the same budget. |

Prime Minister Paul Martin today unveiled a plan for improving support for care-givers, Canadians with disabilities and seniors.
The New Measures to Support Caregivers includes a new Family Leave Program to allow Canadians caring for a seriously ill loved one to take up to two months away from work without losing their job or benefits. The current EI Compassionate Care Benefit will be broadened to include family members other than the currently-specified parent, spouse or child. Martin assured part-time workers that they would be included in the new program. |

NDP MLA for Dartmouth-North, Jerry Pye, has asked the Minister Responsible for the Alcohol and Gaming Authority, Kerry Morash, to change the legislation and regulations for liquor licenses given to adult entertainment clubs in order to stop a strip club from opening in a Dartmouth residential neighbourhood. Pye added that if the Minister does not act, then he will bring in legislation himself in the Spring session of the Legislature. |

NDP Labour Critic Frank Corbett is calling on the Minister of Labour, Kerry Morash, to implement the Draft Violence in the Workplace Regulations prepared by the Province in response to recommendations from the Occupational Health and Safety Council in 1996, and stalled ever since by successive Liberal and Tory governments.
"Over a decade ago sensible regulations were proposed to protect Nova Scotians from violence they may encounter at work," says Corbett. "Nothing has been done to put these regulations into effect. As a result Nova Scotians have paid the price. They have paid it in taxi cabs, in convenience stores, and in many other occupations where people work alone or with the public." |
