Competition Bureau Joins U.S. Law Enforcement in Derailing Bogus Fuel Saving Scam

The Competition Bureau has filed two consent agreements against Canadian spammers of a bogus product called Fuel Saver Pro, which claims to increase fuel efficiency andreduce emissions.

Acting on information obtained under the "Button Pusher Spam Sweep" from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Bureau commenced an inquiry into the marketing practices of several individuals involved in the sale and promotion of the Fuel Saver Pro, which sold for $89.99 (U.S.).

Dexter Calls For All Parties to Work to Avert Christmas Strike at Nursing Home

NDP Leader Darrell Dexter is calling on both the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union and the Hamm government to quickly agree on a voluntary cooling off period to avert a strike at Duncan MacMillan nursing home in Sheet Harbour that could displace twenty-five elderly residents just before the holidays.

Racist Canadian Website Denied Internet Service

The Canadian Homeland Migration website, formerly located at http://members.shaw.ca/nish1/index.html, described itself as 'The Canadian Arm of the Northwest Migration Movement', has been quickly removed by Shaw Cablesystems, as a result of a notification by the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies. Shaw formerly hosted this extremist Canadian website.

Harper Announces Conservative Platform for Québec

Conservative leader Stephen Harper today presented the party’s platform for Québec. Harper promises a Conservative government will provide Quebecers with results and not just promises that can never be kept. Among other things, Harper referred to open federalism, the economy, families, and a concrete plan to clean up Ottawa.

Liberal Health Critic Pleased Government Acting on Self-Managed Care Bill

Liberal Health Critic, Dave Wilson, is pleased government has finally announced some of the details surrounding the Liberal Private Member's Bill No 179, the Self-managed Support-care Act.

The Liberal bill expanded on the pilot program already in place by allowing people with disabilities throughout the province to hire their own attendants with money received directly from Home Care. An independent evaluation of the original pilot program showed a reduction of the cost of care by 29%, fewer visits to emergency rooms and less time spent by participants in acute care facilities.

PETA , Rising Coal Prices Are Grounding Santa‘s Sleigh

Pepsi SantaIn a memo sent to Halifax Live, Mr. Santa Claus has announced that this year, due to unforeseen bureaucratic difficulties as well as personal circumstances, he will be unable to a participate in scheduled deliveries planned for December 25, 2005. The reasons cited by his attorney are as follows:

1)      Due to new regulations passed by the Canadian Aviation Regulation Advisory Council (CARAC), all transports that rely solely on reindeer or similar species for propulsion must meet strict new regulatory standards. Specifically, each reindeer must have a minimum of a thousands hours of instrument only flight training as well as pass extensive security screenings. Furthermore, CARAC has also expressed concerns about potential weight limit issues, and has therefore advised its members to place a temporary injunction on Mr. Claus until such a point as the latter looses sufficient weight to allow for safe take-off and landing procedures.

Liberal Tax Plan Offers Immediate Benefits for Families

Prime Minister Paul Martin and Finance Minister Ralph Goodale announced today that the Liberal tax-cut plan will begin providing real savings to Canadians across the country, beginning this year.

“The Liberal tax plan has been approved by Parliament and is now in place – delivering a retroactive personal income tax cut to middle and lower-income Canadians for the 2005 tax year,” said the Prime Minister while on a campaign stop in Regina.

Prime Minister Martin also confirmed that low-income seniors and families with children will be receiving payments in January – under the new Canada Energy Benefit – to help them deal with high energy costs.

Justice John Gomery Named Time Magazine's Canadian Newsmaker of the Year for 2005

Santa's Winter Wonderland is Melting

As Santa prepares his sleigh and reindeer for their annual Christmas journey from the North Pole, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) sends out an urgent warning that his snowy home is in danger of melting well before the end of this century, unless greenhouse gas emissions are cut drastically.

A WWF study, 'Arctic Climate Change with a 2 degree C Global Warming' by Dr. Mark New of Oxford University, suggests that the earth may have warmed by 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels as early as 2026. The study used simulations of global climate change to predict that the Arctic will warm by up to three times this amount which could result in Santa's home changing forever.

Advisory - Health Canada Prohibits Sale of Bextra in Canada

 Following a review of safety information, Health Canada is informing the public that Bextra, an anti-inflammatory drug used to treat arthritis and pain, will not return to the market.

The manufacturer voluntarily suspended sales of Bextra in April 2005 due to safety concerns related to rare but serious skin reactions and cardiovascular problems. Health Canada issued a stop-sale order which ensured that Bextra (the brand name for valdecoxib) would not return to the market without further consultation with Health Canada.

Nova Scotia Power Issues Warning About Distributed LED Holiday Lights

Nova Scotia Power is asking people to immediately disconnect and stop using outdoor LED holiday lights distributed at five municipal tree lighting ceremonies, the IWK tree lighting ceremony and through Feed Nova Scotia.
