As the debate continues unabated in Canada on the pros and cons of staying the course in Afghanistan and as the troop death toll rises dramatically just within the last week, rumours are emerging from behind closed doors on Parliament Hill that Canada's top politicos have been bandying about the viability of implementing conscription otherwise known as compulsory military service. With suggestions by Canada's top military brass that perhaps we will be remaining in Afghanistan for much longer than 2009, the obvious question arises concerning Canada's ability to retain effective troop levels. Specifically, troop levels required to fight in this war over several more years.

Mere hours after I published my article titled 'Two Eurofighter Typhoon Jets Over Dartmouth Last Saturday - Why?' an angry Peter Spurway responded via email. I will admit that I did not contact Mr. Spurway while writing this particular column but instead relied upon quotes attributed to the airport authority spokesman and published by our region's daily newspapers. I doubted that he would take me into his confidence while spurning the Chronicle-Herald.

Polls can be very revealing and I'm not talking about polling results. Hotline host Rick Howe dismissed polls that showed overwhelming support for Halifax's bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Howe didn't believe the polls and offered various theories for his reluctance to believe the results. Even the word 'FIXED' was used.... but I won't go there. |

It's not every day that Dartmouth residents can glance into the sky above and watch in shock and awe as they witness two unrecognizable fighter jets flying in formation alongside a fairly large and also unrecognizable 747-like aircraft. But that's exactly what happened last Saturday.

The Halifax Live rumour mill is bursting with juicy tales of a city desperate for a major 2007 outdoor concert. Rumour has it that Genesis is on the Halifax want list. Genesis of course is the Brit band led by Phil Collins. |

Not only is HRM councillor Steve Streatch too busy for regional council meetings, his time is too valuable to waste on city business. You see, he has more important things to do. The Halifax Daily News exposed a different kind of 'Inconvenient Truth" last week, and it's sure cause an already cynical public to become even more cynical of our politicians. |

People shouldn't pee in the pool and complain later when they swallow a mouthful of yellow water. But that's exactly what Rick Howe has been doing for the past couple of weeks. It's not new. Rick Howe is the host of the Hotline on AM 920 CJCH radio. It's a talk radio show - he mostly talks. You may be asking yourself what exactly is Mr. Howe being hypocritical about now? The answer this time is the lack of a major outdoor summer concert bash on the Halifax Commons. |

Update #1 added Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at 9 pm. Update #2 added Thursday, April 5, 2007 at 10 pm. Updates can be found at end of article.
Following the announcement in early March issued by Menu Pet Foods concerning a massive recall of wet cat and dog food because of the presence of toxins in the food, other pet food suppliers are also recalling specific brands on a voluntary or precautionary basis. Because the list of recalled pet food is expanding on an almost daily basis, confusion prevails in pet owners throughout North America.
HalifaxLive.com in an effort to supply the latest information in one place has put together the list of currently recalled pet food brands as of Tuesday, April 3. 2007. If more pet food brands are added to the recall list, HalifaxLive will update accordingly. |

No one wants to take the blame for the Commonwealth Games mess. We got a billion over budget and no one seems to know why. The feds say, and they are correct, that they ponyed up their 400-million and left. The 2014 bid committee CEO Scott Logan says he wouldn’t do anything differently which is either a case of arrogance or ignorance or both. |

Aminopterin has been identified as the chemical found in imported wheat gluten from China that is responsible for the current North American-wide pet food recall by Menu Foods. Wheat gluten is a common filler used in the manufacture of pet food. But what exactly is aminopterin and how did it get into our pet food?
Aminopterin was developed for use in chemotherapy, specifically childhood leukemia in the late 1940s. Because of the instability of the compound and the emergence of a specific birth defect (fetal aminopterin syndrome) from women who had been treated with the drug, it fell into disfavour with the scientific community for decades. Aminopterin is being once again tested in clinical trials for treatment of leukemia.
