NDP Leader Jack Layton said the NDP would commit another $200 million per year to training health care professionals – filling out the NDP health plan.
The NDP would also move to block private insurance systems and implement a National Prescription Drug Plan.
The increased funding for training will be transferred to the provinces and territories with negotiated agreements to ensure that the money is allocated to address the skills in shortest supply in each part of the country. The additional investment is sufficient to fund the equivalent of another 16,000 nursing training spots.

Stephen Harper's Conservatives are calling for five- and ten-year mandatory minimum prison sentences for gun crimes, hiring more police, cracking down on smuggling, and increased support for youth at risk.
Speaking at the Eaton Centre, metres away from the site of the Boxing Day shootings, Stephen Harper released the party’s plan to Stand up for Security today.

Prime Minister Paul Martin today announced a series of measures to support Canadians families in surmounting barriers in education, training and finding a good job.
“Reducing the cost of tuition for Canadian families, and improving Canadians’ access to skills training and employment opportunities is about ensuring that all Canadians – and their families – can prosper in the global economy,” the Prime Minister said. “It is about helping Canadian families be full partners in an innovative, competitive and inclusive workforce in Canada.”

Today the Alternative Federal Budget released a detailed report card on the achievements of the 2004-05 Minority Parliament and awarded the Martin Minority an overall C grade for "some progress."
Minority Report: A Report Card on the 2004-05 Minority Government outlines the problems, grades the efforts, and outlines an unfinished People's Agenda for the next government. The report, published by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, was put together with input from numerous civil society organizations representing millions of Canadians.

NDP Leader Jack Layton today released the NDP plan for a National Prescription Drug Plan to help seniors and families facing catastrophic drug costs.
“We should be making sure that seniors and all Canadians have equitable access to medically necessary prescription drugs, regardless of where they live or how much money they’ve made,” Layton said. “We can’t fix all the issues with prescription drugs all at once. But we can take some practical first steps and get moving in the right direction.”

Prime Minister Paul Martin today set out the next steps in the Liberal government’s plan to support Canadian families with a bold new health platform, including a Canada Health Care Guarantee; 1,000 new family doctors; a new National Cancer Strategy; and a Canadian Mental Health Commission.
“Canadian families have a right to a health care system that puts their needs first. They have a right to quality care in a timely manner by ensuring that critical wait times are reduced. They have a right to a health care system that is accountable to them. Above all, they have a right to care based on need not ability to pay,” Prime Minister Martin said.

And we thought the whole same-sex marriage thing was over and done with and a glimmer of hope was on the horizon that maybe just maybe the entire gay issue would become the non-issue it should be and perhaps we would witness that edification in our lifetime. Just when we were tentatively beginning to exhale, a political dinosaur re-enters the public arena and states unequivocally that all gay people are gay because they choose to be. And good heavens no they're not born that way and the final little gem, God made all of humankind with the exception of gay people.
