The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) is expanding the number of its Agency Stores to improve service to smaller communities throughout the province. A Request For Proposal (RFP) is being issued Monday, May 8, 2006 for an additional 31 potential communities.

Nova Scotia to Regulate Gas and Diesel Fuels, Effective July 1 Print E-mail

The provincial government will regulate gas and diesel fuel prices in Nova Scotia, effective July 1. "Nova Scotians want more stable gas prices and they want to know those prices are justified," Richard Hurlburt, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, said today, May 3. The minister confirmed that the Utility and Review Board (UARB) will assume responsibility for setting the price of gasoline and diesel fuel after a hearing process later this fall.

Alex J. WallingJackie Robinson, Larry Doby, Willie O’Ree and Jamie Harris would not be pleased over this idea of having an ‘all black school’. And one could add Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, James Meredith (he’s the first black student who attended the University of Mississippi in 1962) and the many others who fought while some gave their lives, for integration.

We all know of Jackie Robinson, the first black man to play in major league baseball in 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers.  Doby was the first American League black athlete and he came into the majors a year later with the American League Cleveland Indians.

I spent my childhood watching Willie O’Ree fly through the Quebec Professional hockey league with the Quebec Aces and he became the first black man to play in the NHL when he was called up by the Boston Bruins for two games in 1958 and 43 more in 1960-61.

United Church of Canada Signs $6.9 Million Residential Schools Settlement Agreement Print E-mail

The United Church of Canada announced today that it will sign the Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. General Council Officer for Residential Schools, Rev. James Scott said in a statement that the settlement is "a historic agreement that recognizes and begins to address, in a comprehensive package, the harm done to Aboriginal individuals and communities by the Indian Residential School system".

Province Forecasting Higher Surplus for 2005-06 Print E-mail

The province is forecasting a surplus of $151 million for the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2006, well above the amount budgeted last year, Finance Minister Michael Baker said today, May 1. In a speech to the Bridgewater and Area Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Baker said that rising offshore gas royalties and other revenues contributed to a surplus that is $87.7 million higher than budgeted last spring.

Stats Canada Advisory: E-mail Spreading Incorrect Information About Census Questions on Language Print E-mail

An anonymous email is currently circulating on the Internet regarding the language questions from the upcoming 2006 Census. It spreads false information and encourages bilingual Francophones to not mention their knowledge of both official languages in the Census, on May 16, supposedly to prevent the federal government from reducing its services to Francophones.
