NS Liberal Leader Francis MacKenzie is concerned that a federal Conservative government will jeopardize a plan to base a rapid deployment unit in Shearwater.
Last September Rear Admiral Dan McNeil told the Halifax Chamber of Commerce that a special contingency force will be staged at a revitalized Shearwater airbase. The force which will be based on a naval task group will be amphibious in nature and have the ability to send 800 troops anywhere in the world on only 10 days notice. |

Prime Minister Paul Martin has confirmed reports that one Canadian soldier has been killed and three others injured after a suicide bomber struck their military convoy in the city of Kandahar in Afghanistan. Martin offered his condolences to the soldier's families whose names will not be released until proper notification.
Several Afghan civilians were killed in the blast while more were injured according to early reports coming out of the area.
Witnesses described the blast which shattered windows in buildings close by, as being so powerful that it blew the Canadian armored vehicle completely off the road in an area just inside city limits.
The three injured Canadian soldiers were transported via air to a U.S. air base.
Violence has been steadily increasing inside the Afghanistan borders especially in the Kandahar area in which the Canadian contingeny is based. Troop levels remain at a steady 650 at this time but Canada is expected to add to those numbers by at least 2,000 in February. |

After living in Nova Scotia for a few years, a couple of things quickly become apparent. For one, pedestrians and drivers have developed a strange east-coast form of ESP, which allows the latter to know exactly when the former decides to dart out onto a street. Both sides acknowledge each other with a friendly wave, oblivious to their almost mystical union. Casualties only occur if an unfortunate pedestrians tries this stunt with a tourist. Faster then you can say “Agricola is not a soft drink” , the poor Bluenoser finds himself squeezing a Loonie into Phlegyas’ outstretched hand before crossing the Styx to have a Keith’s with Howe and the boys . |
