A quirky new show debuted on the NBC television network last Friday night across the U.S. and Canada but not everyone was given the option of viewing it. The Jack Kenny production of The Book of Daniel aired on January 6 in a two-hour premier of the limited six-hour series.
Touted as a comedy/drama, 'Daniel' stars Aidan Quinn as Father Daniel Webster, an Episcopal priest. If you're thinking this is just another version of Seventh Heaven, think again - Father Daniel's family is actually believable and gasp! - they're far from perfect.
Susanna Thompson plays Father Daniel's stressed out better half who has a penchant for dry martinis sometimes with two olives. Together they have a daughter who sells pot to fund entry into a Japanese animation school; an adopted son of Asian ancestry
and overactive hormones; and a natural son who is gay but not completely out of the closet.

With the announcement today that three more private health care clinics will be opened in three Ontario cities by this coming summer, this writer believes it is prudent to re-publish a column written late last year which explored the new trend, dubbed the 'bastardisation of Canada's health care system'.
On Wednesday, Don Copeman who founded the first private clinic in Vancouver announced the expansion of his private clinic franchise in Toronto, Ottawa and London. Copeman has plans to open 12 elite private healthcare clinics across the country including plans for a clinic in Halifax by the end of 2008.
Accompanying Mr. Copeman at the news conference today was the Corporate Medical Director of Copeman Healthcare Centres, Dr. Peter House who pointed out to reporters that long wait lists and lack of "individualized" health care prevention programs within our existing universal arrangement have contributed to an ineffective public system. House added, "Unfortunately, managing your health is more difficult than ever in Canada, particularly when it comes to preventing serious illness or treating urgent or elective medical conditions.”

NDP Leader Jack Layton today released the NDP platform that provides a plan to get results for people. The NDP plan outlines action to help youth and seniors, protect and improve public health care, and a plan to clean up politics and keep budgets balanced while preventing any tax increases.
“Our plan to address these issues is affordable, responsible and fits inside a balanced budget, each and every year,” Layton said. “The federal government has enough money and doesn’t need to raise its taxes to do its job.”

Mayor Peter Kelly says the best solution for increased public safety and security in Canada is to integrate policing services across the country.
Mayor Kelly said on Tuesday that since Canadian municipalities pay for 65 per cent of all policing costs in the country, they should have a seat at the table with the federal and provincial governments in an effort to examine ways to integrate and better focus policing efforts, based on today’s challenges.
