After witnessing firsthand the social isolation of her son because of his autism spectrum disorder, Heather McCracken recognized the absolute necessity for bridging the gap between neurotypical children and their peers with autism. After an exhaustive search McCracken realized "there was no program, no expert, no one to help support the one thing that my son desired above everything else - friends."

Desecration of The War Memorial - Veterans Group Says Government Must Protect National Treasure Print E-mail

North Korea has issued a dire warning to the United States that any attempt by the U.S. to engage in a pre-emptive strike against the tiny nation would result in an "annihilating strike" and a nuclear war.

Rolling Stones Coming to Halifax - Another Financial Beast of Burden Print E-mail

 Halifax Regional council is expected to announce on Tuesday July 4 the signing of a deal with aging rockers the Rolling Stones that will culminate in a major outdoor concert in Halifax this coming fall. Also slated to perform are Aerosmith and The Who.

On the heels of the report leaked today by a local news service, concerned citizens already armed with the knowledge that no city has ever shown a profit from Stones' concerts, are already raising doubts that Halifax can afford to host what is being touted as a "major concert". With preliminary projections of well over $100,000 in security and other basic but necessary services alone, the people of Halifax will soon be demanding and rightly so an indepth accounting of the full cost of such a venture including concerns that taxpayers could be facing yet another property tax hike.

Transport Canada Proposes Security Background Checks on Canadian Port Workers Print E-mail

The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced proposed amendments to the Marine Transportation Security Regulations that will strengthen marine security by requiring background checks for port workers through the Marine Transportation Security Clearance Program.

The Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University and the Brain Repair Centre have announced the first successful surgery in Canada to implant the Precision(TM) Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) system, an advanced medical device that provides relief for patients living with chronic pain. The procedure took place on May 1, 2006.

The 2006 United Nations World Drug Report was released on Monday and paints an alarming picture of the effects and increasing potency of marijuana. By far the world's most abused illicit drug, cannabis consumption has been increasing each year along with cannabis-related physical and mental health damage because of a higher potency than a few decades ago.

Finance Minister Flaherty To Provinces: Need Money? Raise Provincial Taxes Print E-mail

At a time when provinces are attempting to negotiate fairer and more lucrative equalization deals as well as an increase in per-capita transfers, Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's message to the premiers is blunt - you need money for better health care and more effective education? Raise your taxes. Flaherty's message comes on the heels of a report from Ottawa that the country's consolidated surplus of $26 billion is at its second highest level since 1986.
