Here's the deal. No, I'm not talking about low prices. I'm talking about the false wall at Wal-Mart's newest location in Bedford. Here's the scoop. No, I'm not talking about poop. A well placed source tells Halifax Live that the new Wal-Mart in Bedford will soon be expanding. That's right, expanding. No, I'm not talking about their waistline. Well, maybe I am... You're probably asking yourself why would a store that just opened last month be expanding? |

We here at Halifax Live are delighted that Ottawa is moving forward with funding for the new Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Although we suspect that Winnipeggers would rather have their hockey team back, we never the less congratulate the citizens of that fair city on their new cultural attraction. One thing that puzzles us however is why American architect Antoine Predock chose to model the new building on the Pickelhaube, the Prussian designed helmet worn by German soldiers up until the middle of the first World War. |

Mere hours after I published my article titled 'Two Eurofighter Typhoon Jets Over Dartmouth Last Saturday - Why?' an angry Peter Spurway responded via email. I will admit that I did not contact Mr. Spurway while writing this particular column but instead relied upon quotes attributed to the airport authority spokesman and published by our region's daily newspapers. I doubted that he would take me into his confidence while spurning the Chronicle-Herald.

Update #1 added Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at 9 pm. Update #2 added Thursday, April 5, 2007 at 10 pm. Updates can be found at end of article.
Following the announcement in early March issued by Menu Pet Foods concerning a massive recall of wet cat and dog food because of the presence of toxins in the food, other pet food suppliers are also recalling specific brands on a voluntary or precautionary basis. Because the list of recalled pet food is expanding on an almost daily basis, confusion prevails in pet owners throughout North America.
HalifaxLive.com in an effort to supply the latest information in one place has put together the list of currently recalled pet food brands as of Tuesday, April 3. 2007. If more pet food brands are added to the recall list, HalifaxLive will update accordingly. |

Aminopterin has been identified as the chemical found in imported wheat gluten from China that is responsible for the current North American-wide pet food recall by Menu Foods. Wheat gluten is a common filler used in the manufacture of pet food. But what exactly is aminopterin and how did it get into our pet food?
Aminopterin was developed for use in chemotherapy, specifically childhood leukemia in the late 1940s. Because of the instability of the compound and the emergence of a specific birth defect (fetal aminopterin syndrome) from women who had been treated with the drug, it fell into disfavour with the scientific community for decades. Aminopterin is being once again tested in clinical trials for treatment of leukemia.

Dartmouth resident Holly Slaunwhite, already in mourning over the sudden and tragic death of her six year-old cat, 'Mummie' last week is today saying goodbye to another animal companion. 'Pinkie' is an adult domesticated rat who was adopted by Ms. Slaunwhite in 2004, an unusual choice for the self-professed 26 year-old cat-person but a decision that she has never regretted.
Today Pinkie is dying and in an effort to minimize the rat's obvious suffering, Slaunwhite will have her euthanized. Less than seven days ago, Mummie the cat was suffering in the same manner. When rushed to the Vet for treatment, Slaunwhite had no idea that Mummie would not be returning home again.
