HRM Launches First Economic Strategy Print E-mail

HALIFAX, Thursday, November 17, 2005 - Cooperation and commitment among partners were the two common themes running through a ceremony today to officially launch Halifax Regional Municipality’s first Economic Strategy.

Mayor Peter Kelly, Regional Councillors, members of the HRM Economic Strategy Advisory Committee, representatives of the Halifax Chamber of Commerce, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), the Nova Scotia Office of Economic development and other government and stakeholders representatives attended the event at City Hall.

Health Canada Warning Consumers Not To Take Chinese Medicine 'Shortclean' Print E-mail

OTTAWA - Canada is warning consumers not to take the Chinese medicine Shortclean because it contains glibenclamide (glyburide) and phenformin, two prescription drugs that could pose a serious health risk for people with low blood sugar or diabetes. Shortclean has been promoted for the control of diabetes and as being derived from only natural ingredients.

The Honourable Anne McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, introduced the new Emergency Management Act today in the House of Commons.

The Deputy Prime Minister, "The recent bombings in London and the hurricanes in the United States Gulf Coast have reinforced that leadership, coordination, and seamless emergency management are all essential to Canada's readiness for dealing with emergencies and saving lives."

 In a move that is being criticised by animal rights goups, a zoo in Thailand will mark its official opening with something one wouldn't ordinarily expect from zoo keepers - not only will some invited guests be able to see a wide variety of exotic animals, they'll be able to taste a few of them as well.

MacKenzie Concerned About Tourism Print E-mail

Liberal Leader, Francis MacKenzie, says the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism statistics for the Annapolis Valley do not reflect what operators in the area are actually saying about what they're calling a "lousy" season. The report shows occupancy rates in Annapolis Valley motels, bed-and-breakfasts and campgrounds are down by 4 per cent, and the number of nights sold down by 10 per cent. However, those who make their living renting out rooms are saying the situation is far worse.
