In a bizarre about-face amid the hugely unpopular government-funded all terrain vehicle (ATV) safety program debacle, Nova Scotia Premier Rodney MacDonald today is not only lashing out at the Health Department for their purchase of over a quarter of a million dollars worth of mini-ATVs, he is now demanding that the $230,000 in question be returned to government coffers.
Earlier today the premier told reporters that in his opinion the ATV deal was handled "poorly" and the money will be recouped, although he admitted not knowing how the government would accomplish that feat. The premier's comments today will undoubtedly cause many taxpayers yet another collective shake of their heads as they ponder his words from mere days past as he defended and lauded the entire program along with the expensive price tag. When asked to comment one day after the announcement last week by the NS Department of Health Promotion and Protection MacDonald stated, "It's not uncommon for those vehicles to be provided in training courses. If it's an investment in safety for our young people, the government's willing to make it." Last week Premier MacDonald was "willing to make" the expensive investment. This week the premier wants the government's money back having decided that the program was handled "poorly". To muddy the waters just a bit further, the premier told reporters that he didn't even know about the $230,000 purchase until one day after the official announcement last week. |
