Halifax, N.S. - Liberal MLA, Keith Colwell, along with representatives from the neuro-surgical communit and the Helmet Safety Action Committee (HSAC) say the provincial helmet laws in Nova Scotia do not go far enough to protect those who use bikes, skateboards, in-line skates, and scooters.
The current law requires helmets to be used on streets, roads, alleys, sidewalks, lanes and trails. The Act omits the obvious skate-parks, parking lots and/or private property. "It doesn't make any sense for this law to overlook the areas where these kinds of sports are practiced," said Colwell. Colwell requests that the provincial government either call the Liberal Bill that is currently on the order paper to achieve this change, or make the appropriate amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act when the House resumes.
"We believe helmets should always be worn no matter where the activity takes place. These injuries are preventable and government should take whatever steps necessary to tighten the laws," Colwell added. |
