Time To End This Culture Of Entitlement Print E-mail

Hal JessiOver the past few weeks I have been troubled by this "culture of entitlement" that has been shown to exist in the very foundation of our democracy. Our government under the direction of the Liberal Party has given birth to a culture so arrogant, that a man by the likes of David Dingwall, with Royal Blood so blue, actually believes the taxpayer is obligated to ensure he lives like a pampered King while sitting on his porcelain throne of political patronage.

Now that I have that out of my system, let's get to the real, and often ignored, "culture of entitlement," that the left wing in this country is supporting, defending and demanding.

Politicians like the leader of the federal NDP, Jack Layton, have been able to nurture this culture of entitlement through years of constantly demanding more and more from what the NDP would like you to believe is the bottomless pit of cash-infinitum, known more popularly as the taxpayer's wallet.

The topic I'm about to explore is so politically incorrect that it is considered taboo to discuss it in the public arena. Today I'll break that rule, at the risk of being labeled a "Poor Basher."

I'm referring to the Culture of Entitlement in this country and in this province that believes the taxpayer should pick up the tab for postsecondary education. I find it difficult to believe that people in this province believe that we as individual people should collectively cover the cost of a postsecondary education. The idea has gathered enough momentum across this country that we now have a culture of entitlement that is demanding the taxpayer cover the cost of their university education.

I also have an issue with the culture in our society that believes social assistance is a way of life. Social assistance is and should only be, a safety net, not a entitlement that gives to generation after generation.

As a taxpayer, you're also expected to support a culture that believes our society should collectively subsidize and construct housing for low income earners. This culture doesn't believe they have an obligation to better themselves, but instead demands the rest of us, better their living conditions and lives.

We also have a culture that believes our society should be subsidizing and constructing affordable housing. This culture differs in many ways from the low income housing culture, but they share the same basic entitlement belief system. In many respects this culture earns in excess of $30,000 per year and believes the high cost of real-estate is a taxpayer problem, and thus, the taxpayer should bear the burden of making more affordable housing available for their pleasure and enjoyment.

There's more.

Of course, we also have a culture of entitlement that believes our government should bear the responsibility for high oil prices and offer cash rebates, courtesy of the taxpayer, to a special segment of our society. This culture believes the taxpayer is obligated to help fill their oil tank. The government does have a role to play on this particular issue, but it's role should be reducing the tax on home heating fuel as opposed to offering rebates to a narrow segment of society.

For those of you that have been condemning the political culture of entitlement, take a long look in the mirror and ask yourself, "What have I been demanding from the taxpayer lately?"

Yes, it's time to end this culture of entitlement, at all levels.
