Crusade To Cleanup Slumlords, Be Careful What You Wish For Print E-mail
Written by Hal Jesso

Hal JessoDuring Tuesday's edition of the Hotline, host Rick Howe promised to expose slumlords and bring them to their knees, by embarrassing these substandard property owners into cleaning up their act. Howe asked listeners to send him photos and other material to support any substandard housing claims. If substantiated by photo evidence, Howe plans to launch the great crusade against HRM slumlords by naming them on the public airwaves.

For those of you on the bandwagon to cleanup property owners in the HRM commonly referred to as slumlords, please take note.

Be careful, you just might get what you wish for and when you do, it should go without saying that you'll be putting out the welcome mat for at least one or two of the people you'll be putting on the street.

For the uninformed, slumlords, as many of you like to call them, have been a part of Halifax since its founding.

Left-wing do-gooders have a hard time swallowing the fact that without slumlords, the streets of Halifax would be crowded with homeless people fighting for a dumpster to sleep in.

Have any of the slumlord crusaders ever asked the tenant to take on some responsibility for the cleanliness of their own apartment? The short answer, no.

If a tenant is living in a dirt-hole with excrement on the floors, as mentioned by Councillor Dawn Sloane during an appearance on Tuesday's Hotline, do the do-gooders even question how the excrement got there? No, the fact is, if a tenant uses their kitchen sink as the community toilet, the slumlord crusaders believe the property owner is the responsible party.

Jus ask any slumlord crusader to guess the average cost of renting a two bedroom apartment on the Halifax Peninsula and their low-ball answer will probably surprise you.

The slumlord crusaders fail to understand the most important factor in this housing equation. The only real providers of affordable low-cost housing in Halifax for the poor, are the so-called slumlords. If your crusade is successful, substandard rental properties will no longer exist in the HRM. This will have a huge impact on the availability of affordable housing in Halifax.

Until the slumlord crusaders can provide a viable option for these people, they should be very careful what they wish for, or put out a welcome mat.
