A player with the NHL's Detroit Red Wings Jiri Fischer has collapsed while sitting on the bench in the first period of a game between Detroit and the Nashville Predators. CPR began at once and an ambulance has just arrived on scene.
Latest details suggest that Fischer had taken a puck to the neck or was accidentally hit by a stick while sitting on the bench. Fischer's wife is in attendance at the game and has been escorted across the ice to her husband's side. He is on a stretcher and awaiting being taken to the nearest hospital emergency but remains in the arena at this time.
Update: Officials had stopped all ice action as soon as it was apparent there was a medical emergency in the building. The packed ice arena continues to be quiet and serene. Fischer is a 25 year-old defenceman from the Czech Republic and was drafted by the Red Wings in 1998. Latest reports state that Fischer is currently being transported to hospital and is breathing on his own at this time. Hospital reports at app. 9:42 PM indicate that Fischer suffered from a seizure which subsequently caused cardiac arrest. A portable defibrillator was used at the scene which was effective in re-starting his heart. Officials have yet to decide whether to continue with tonight's game or postpone it until another time. |
