Following the news earlier today of the passing of prominent businessman Charles Keating, provincial party leaders are expressing sorrow at the news of his death.

Premier John Hamm's statement:

"Nova Scotia has lost one of its greatest champions and ambassadors," said Premier Hamm. "As a businessman, entrepreneur, community leader, mentor and parent, Charlie Keating cut a wide swath. His generosity can be measured so many ways, from his time to his enthusiasm, from his financial support to his indomitable spirit -- he shared them all so willingly and so graciously.

"On behalf of the government of Nova Scotia, I offer our sincere sympathies to his family, who meant so much to him," said the premier. "Charlie wore his love for his family, his community, his province and his country on his sleeve. Nova Scotia will always carry him in a special place in its heart."

NDP Leader Darrell Dexter's statement:

"As a former Dartmouth City Councillor, I know how big a mark Charlie Keating made," said the NDP Leader, "and how strongly he recognized the importance of each citizen's responsibility to take part in the public life of their community and province."

"Many have gained from his business success, and many more have benefitted from the generosity that Charlie Keating demonstrated."

"On behalf of my legislative colleagues and the New Democratic Party, I offer deepest condolences to his family, friends and associates on the loss of someone who truly made a positive difference."

Liberal Party Leader Francis MacKenzie stated:

“It is with deep sadness that we learn of the passing of Charles V. Keating. He was a great Nova Scotian and he contributed so much to building a better future for so many. To his efforts – we all owe a great deal of gratitude."

“A graduate of St. Francis Xavier University, Charlie was a successful businessman, builder, humanitarian, and fun loving father.  He filled so many of us with inspiration, energy and belief in making society better.  His stories always had a lesson in them and he enjoyed taking on challenges, the tougher the challenge the more he enjoyed the opportunity.”

“He has left a huge mark on the past and future of this province and one that we can hold with respect.  To his family - on behalf of Liberals, a party he enjoyed in so many ways – we offer our heartfelt thanks for Charlie and provide you with our deepest condolences.”
