Halifax – Alexa McDonough, NDP candidate for Halifax, stated that the federal election campaign, set in motion today by Paul Martin, is an opportunity to confront the record, ethics and priorities of the Liberal government, and demonstrate why electing more NDP MPs will get results for Nova Scotians.
“By rejecting a common-sense NDP compromise on timing, the Liberals stubbornness, arrogance and inflexibility forced an election over the holiday season,” said McDonough. “But that allows Canadians to rigorously review the Liberal record, ethics and priorities. It will allow New Democrats to outline priorities that put people first.” “Liberals were elected 12 years ago promising to restore ethics in politics. Instead, they betrayed people’s trust and further entrenched a culture of Liberal entitlement.
“Liberals have failed miserably and deliberately to improve health care, to cut waiting times, and to stop the growth of American-style, for-profit medicine. “And the Liberal priority of corporate tax cuts for their well-connected friends is just wrong,” said McDonough. “New Democrat MPs redirected the Liberals’ $4.5 billion in corporate tax cuts into investments in people, worked to protect workers’ pensions and wages, and helped stop star wars.” “New Democrats in this minority government showed how government could be made to work for people. Jack Layton and the NDP team reshaped the federal budget investing in pollution reduction, lower tuition, affordable housing, and public transit,” McDonough said. “Electing more NDP MPs will deliver more results for people.” |
