NDP Leader Jack Layton today delivered a stinging attack on the Liberal’s failure to stand up for Canada.
Speaking in Vancouver, Layton focused on Liberal failure to have tariffs on softwood lumber removed and for approving the sale of Terasen without public review.
Layton said the Liberals are nothing but talk on trade disputes with the United States.
“New Democrats don’t think talk is good enough when it comes to defending Canada,” Layton said. “If the United States doesn’t agree to respect its treaty obligations and to refund every penny collected improperly in this dispute, we favour a polite, clear, neighbourly warning that Canada is prepared to impose export duties on oil and gas exports to the United States”
Layton also challenged the Liberal approval of the natural gas distributor, Terasen, to American interests without any public hearings or input.
“In the next Parliament, we’ll do everything we can to try to re-open that sale,” Layton said. “We’ll also revisit Canada’s foreign investment review laws so that Canada can make sure sellouts like that don’t happen again without a full, public review.” |
