NDP Nominate Four Women; LPC: None, CPC: None Print E-mail

Once again the NDP has nominated significantly more women candidates in Nova Scotia than the Liberals or Conservatives.  In fact, the Liberals and Conservatives have not nominated any women in this province.

“I am proud that four of the eleven Nova Scotia NDP candidates are women. It is a disgrace that the governing Liberals and Stephen Harper’s Conservatives have not nominated a single female candidate in Nova Scotia,” said NDP candidate for Central Nova, Alexis McDonald.
MacDonald continues, “We need more gender parity not just for the sake of numbers. We need more women candidates, from all ideological bents, to ensure that women’s unique views are represented.  We can’t expect parliament to be gender balanced if we don’t even have women candidates.”

“We need to support and encourage women and other non-traditional candidates to run. Parliament desperately needs to be more reflective of the make-up of Canada.”

In addition to Ms Macdonald, the NDP has nominated Alexa McDonough in Halifax, Margaret Sagar in Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley and Mary DeWolfe in Kings-Hants.

“In a recent meeting with women entrepreneurs in Winnipeg, Paul Martin admitted that he has not paid enough attention to women issues. It took an election call for him to finally pay some attention. Given his previous record on other promises, women have no reason to believe that the federal Liberals, if re-elected, would actually help level the playing field for women,” said MacDonald.

Nationally, thirty-seven percent of NDP candidates are women, while twenty-seven percent of Liberal candidates and eleven percent of Conservative candidates are women.
