Liberal Health Critic, Dave Wilson, is pleased government has finally announced some of the details surrounding the Liberal Private Member's Bill No 179, the Self-managed Support-care Act.
The Liberal bill expanded on the pilot program already in place by allowing people with disabilities throughout the province to hire their own attendants with money received directly from Home Care. An independent evaluation of the original pilot program showed a reduction of the cost of care by 29%, fewer visits to emergency rooms and less time spent by participants in acute care facilities.
"We are pleased to play a role in ensuring that government honored a promise they made to people with disabilities over six years ago," said Wilson. "This is a common sense program that will now be available because government decided to support a common sense bill."
Additional details on the program will be available on the government website on Tuesday December 20, 2005. "While today's announcement is welcomed, the minister has been silent as to which settings qualify for support," added Wilson. "Government needs to be clear as to whether people with disabilities will be able to access the program in order to attend university or volunteer with organizational groups. They also need to reassure those with disabilities that everyone who qualifies, will receive support this fiscal year," Wilson added. |
