Conservative leader Stephen Harper today presented the party’s platform for Québec. Harper promises a Conservative government will provide Quebecers with results and not just promises that can never be kept. Among other things, Harper referred to open federalism, the economy, families, and a concrete plan to clean up Ottawa.
“Our slogan is more than just words—it is our commitment to the citizens of Québec. Making a real change means having an honest government that can help Québec be more than just a powerless spectator in the House of Commons, or totally absent from the cabinet table,” said Harper. “The federal Liberal Party has damaged the cause of federalism in Québec. Millions of Quebecers are looking for an alternative to corruption and separation that only a new Conservative government can provide.”
Under a Conservative government, Québec will have an important place in government and will be able to make progress on important issues. Some of the highlights of the platform are:
- Allow Québec to play a role in international institutions, such as UNESCO, where its cultural responsibilities are at stake, based on the model of the Francophonie Summit;
- Correct the fiscal imbalance between the federal government and the provinces; and
- Recognize provincial autonomy as well as the special cultural and institutional responsibilities of the Québec government.
“Québec would be better represented in Ottawa. And Ottawa should take Québec’s needs more seriously. Only a new Conservative government can help Québec in government. Let’s make a real change,” Harper said. |
