Layton Predicts Liberal Scare Tactic In Toronto Print E-mail

NDP Leader Jack Layton today predicted that Liberals in Toronto will attempt “to paint Stephen Harper and the Conservatives as the big bad wolf. It’s all a fairy tale.”

Introducing the “Team Toronto” NDP candidates, Layton pointed out that Conservatives in Toronto finished an average of almost 15,000 votes behind, and that a federal Conservative has not been elected from Toronto in 17 years.
“A Conservative running in Toronto has as much of a chance of getting elected as a jay-walker does getting across the 401,” Layton said.

Layton said that New Democrats would defeat Conservatives in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba – “where there actually are some to defeat.

“The Liberal scare tactic doesn’t work in Toronto. It’s like being afraid of sharks in Lake Ontario,” Layton said. “They might have big teeth, but you are really not likely to get bitten.”

Layton said that in Toronto, “You don’t have to worry about Conservatives, but you do have to worry about what the Liberals will do.” He pointed out that 7 of 22 Liberal candidates in Toronto voted against treating all Canadians equally – despite Paul Martin’s insincere election-time defence of the Charter of Rights.
