While drivers in the Halifax Regional Municipality have become experts by necessity in the price of a litre of gas, there's a newly emerging segment of society frantically comparing the waxing and waning costs of another fluid commodity - milk. That's right you read it correctly, there's a milk war going on in the HRM and unless you don't touch the stuff you would never be the wiser. But here at Halifaxlive.com we tend to keep our fingers on the pulse of the real community out there and that includes the increasingly over-priced milk consumers.
As of January 2005 the price of a 2 litre milk rose to $3.43 while a 4 litre container skyrocketed to $6.51. Those price increases were across the board and retailers were obliged by dairy pricing regulations to not sell milk at the check-out for even one cent over those two prices. But they could sell under cost. HalifaxLive.com has learned that local establishments including Costco, Sobeys and the Real Atlantic Superstores within the HRM are quietly battling each other in what can only be described as a down and dirty milk war.
Perhaps we are being a tad dramatic but take a look at the facts and decide for yourself:
- Costco in Bayer's Lake late last week set a 4 litre carton of Baxters milk at $5.49; this price was a drop from the previous price of $6.51 for Farmer's brand.
- Wal-Mart and Shopper's Drug Mart quickly followed suit and dropped their own supply of Baxters to $5.49;
- Not to be outdone, Sobeys and Real Atlantic Superstores dropped their Baxters milk prices to $5.49 as well;
- At that point, Wal-Mart decided to drop their milk prices for a 4 litre by one more cent to $5.48. Apparently that one cent drop wasn't attractive enough to consumers so...
- On Thursday, Wal-Mart set the price of Baxters 4 litre milk to the lowest level yet - $5.37.
Do we hear $5.30? Who will be next? Sobeys? Superstore? Let's keep those milk wars going! It's almost Christmas and people are stocking up. The Great HRM Milk Wars...will it go down in history as one of our finest hours? Sobeys and Superstores - the ball is now in your court. |
