The Joint Review Panel for the Sydney Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens Sites Remediation Project today announced the beginning of the public comment period to address the adequacy of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) filed by the Sydney Tar Ponds Agency.
The EIS is intended to allow regulators and members of the public to understand the Project, the existing environment, and the potential environmental effects of the Project. It has been prepared following Guidelines jointly issued by the federal and provincial Environment Ministers on August 30, 2005.
This comment period gives the public and interested parties an opportunity to express their views to the Panel on whether the EIS adequately addresses the requirements of these Guidelines. "The Panel sees the EIS public comment period as a vital component of the environment assessment process," said Panel Chair Lesley Griffiths. "The EIS is the cornerstone of the Panel's evaluation of the potential effects of the Project. Public comments on the adequacy of the EIS will therefore help the Panel to achieve its mandate."
This stage of the review is intended to assist the Panel in determining whether the proponent must provide any additional information before the Panel schedules public hearings. Written comments on the EIS will be received until February 16, 2006. Please forward your written comments by mail, e-mail or fax to the attention of: Joint Review Panel Sydney Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens Sites Remediation Project P.O.
