And we thought the whole same-sex marriage thing was over and done with and a glimmer of hope was on the horizon that maybe just maybe the entire gay issue would become the non-issue it should be and perhaps we would witness that edification in our lifetime. Just when we were tentatively beginning to exhale, a political dinosaur re-enters the public arena and states unequivocally that all gay people are gay because they choose to be. And good heavens no they're not born that way and the final little gem, God made all of humankind with the exception of gay people.
I'm talking of course about New Brunswick's own, Elsie Wayne. She has been appointed the Atlantic Chair of a recently formed national group of intolerant individuals whose sole purpose is to take away the brand new legal rights of gay people to marry in this country. 'Vote Marriage Canada' is a faith-based organization that promises the people of this country that they are "working to elect a pro-traditional marriage Parliament to protect our children's future". Translation? A group of people who want to see homosexuals step back into that closet of theirs. And shut up about it. Apparently same-sex marriage will be the catalyst to the fall of humankind into the deep pit of hell and damnation the likes of which has never been witnessed in the history of this great earth. Those who support Vote Marriage Canada profess to be christians and demand that our government conduct itself honouring biblical values. This writer has to ask, what bible are you people reading?? Because the bible that I'm familiar with encourages love, tolerance and acceptance to all God's children and guess what - "all God's children" includes gay people. Even married gay people. But I digress which ironically is defined as "wandering from a direct or straight course".
On Tuesday the impending announcement of Ms. Wayne's appointment as Atlantic Chair of Vote Marriage Canada was reported on the same news site that publishes my columns but hey, it was a slow news day and on such days, any news is better then no news at all. This morning on 95.7 FM radio's morning talk show hosted by Andrew Krystal, Elsie Wayne was Krystal's first guest and of course the topic was her appointment to Vote Marriage Canada. The interview was a disaster waiting to happen and in true Elsie Wayne fashion it took a grand total of 10 minutes for her to ruin any credibility she may have had when she assured Krystal and his listening audience that homosexuality is a lifestyle choice. But did she stop there? Come on, it's Elsie Wayne, of course she didn't stop there. She continued on her downward spiral by stating that her God did indeed create humankind - except homosexuals. The Bible According to Elsie remember, states that all people are born straight but some poor unfortunate souls chose to be gay later on. For goodness sake, some gay people have actually been able to throw off the evil and ungodly cloak of homosexuality and turn straight. It's a miracle I tell you! Praise the lord. If Vote Marriage Canada was attempting to establish themselves as a group of individuals who were 100% accepting of homosexuality and were in complete agreement with gay couples having the right to a legal 'civil union' versus a 'marriage', they completely blew it the moment they considered offering Elsie Wayne any position within their ranks. Instead they took an entirely plausible and debatable premise - 'civil union' instead of 'marriage' - and with Wayne's appointment instantly degraded Vote Marriage Canada into just one more group of neo-christian, evangelical gay bashers. Way to go VMC! You've been watching the evangelical movement south of the 49th, haven't you... I invite, no I implore everyone reading this to take a long look at Vote Marriage Canada's website here: votemarriagecanada.ca . Notice which organizations the website touts as supporters: -carters.ca - "Carter & Associates (Carters) is a leading firm with a focus on assisting churches, charities and not-for-profit organizations both in Canada and internationally." -www.evangelicalfellowship.ca - the name says it all. -Focus On Family - "a charitable organization, built on Christian principles, which supports, encourages and strengthens Canadian families through education and resources". -pro-marriage.ca - need I say more? -Promise Keepers Canada - an evangelical christian organization whose membership is restricted to men and made up almost entirely of conservative christians. Still not convinced? Then consider this - a founder of Vote Marriage Canada is Dr. Grant Hill, a surgeon by profession and a former top level member of the original Canadian Alliance party and subsequently the Conservative Party of Canada. And a Mormom. Dr. Hill is of the belief that homosexuality is an unhealthy lifestyle and that homosexuals spread disease including the very mysterious "gay bowel syndrome". I hereby rest my case.
