Suddenly the upcoming Academy Awards has become must-see TV. With the announcement that Jon Stewart, host of the popular Daily Show television show will host this year's event, many are marking the broadcast date on their calendars - Sunday, March 5, 2006.
Stewart does have some previous hosting experience after filling that position for the Grammy Awards in 2001 and 2002. Actor/comedian Chris Rock who hosted last year's Oscar event was not considered this year and a perennial favourite of the Academy and fans, Billy Crystal declined because of scheduling conflicts.
Although Stewart has limited acting credentials (most often a necessity for Oscar hosts) Oscar producer Gil Cates believes the popular political humourist will be a perfect fit for the emcee spot. Reports indicate that Stewart will bring some of his own writers from The Daily Show to assist with some of his material, a plan that fans of the show will no doubt applaud with enthusiasm. With Stewart as host, this year's Academy Awards show promises to offer some of the best TV in recent history and with the announcement that the controversial "Brokeback Mountain" has been nominated for best picture, Stewart's fans will be waiting with bated breath. |
