Newfoundland Group Wins Aliant Garage Band Contest |

Aliant, Atlantic Canada's leading information and communications technology provider, today officially announced the grand prize winner of its Garage Band contest, which is aimed at young Atlantic Canadians who are active in making music with their friends, family and neighbours.
The Rayfield Band from Newfoundland and Labrador is the grand prize winner and will have the opportunity to play at the opening Canadian date of the Vans Warped Tour 2006 to be held in Vancouver this summer. Band members include Jordan Taylor, Daniel Gilbert, Ryan Taylor, Dion Hynes, and Chase Strickland. Vans Warped Tour is a popular touring music and extreme sports festival, with a reputation for featuring up and coming artists.
"We're all ecstatic," said Ryan Taylor. "It's fitting that we would win a Garage Band contest, because I can't think of anyone else who fits the term better than us. We had only started as a band one month before entering this contest, and things have definitely picked up more than we ever expected. We'd like to thank everyone who took the time to vote and we'd like to thank Aliant for this amazing opportunity."
Rayfield received 48 per cent of the total 5,368 votes by Atlantic Canadians who visited the website www.aliant.net/youth101 between December 5 and January 3. Visitors were able to listen to two tracks from each band or musician and view concert footage online before casting their votes. Each voter was registered and each entry was validated by Aliant.
"We'd like to thank all entrants of the Garage Band contest. We had more than 100 amateur bands throughout Atlantic Canada submitting their audio or video demos online" said Deanna Miller, Manager, Aliant Youth Marketing. "There is tremendous young musical talent in Atlantic Canada and we believe the Garage Band contest is a great way for Aliant to provide relevant support to youth in our communities by providing resources and exposure."
The finalists of the contest were Kristina Trites, Nova Scotia; Tyler Lombard, New Brunswick; The Chucky Danger Band, Prince Edward Island; and Rayfield, Newfoundland & Labrador. Each of the finalists played the opening set in their province for the popular reggae/rock band Bedouin Soundclash during their Atlantic concert tour between November 30 and December 3. In addition, they received exposure and airplay in their home provinces, from participating in print and radio interviews to co-hosting radio programs. |
