MacKenzie Wants Direct Billing for Low Income Diabetic Program Print E-mail
Written by NS Liberal Party

Liberal Leader Francis MacKenzie and Health Critic Dave Wilson wonder
what took so long for the Tory Government to put into place assistance for Diabetics
with no drug coverage.
Last month the government revealed its plan to reimburse eligible Nova Scotians 80
percent of the cost of diabetic medication and supplies. "This was a promise made in
the 2003 election. It's supposed to replace a program that was cancelled by this
government in 2000. What took so long? How many people have suffered while the
Tories are once again dragging their heals," asks Wilson.

Liberal Leader Francis MacKenzie says many low-income Nova Scotians who would qualify for this program do not have the money up front for costs. "Why doesn't the government arrange for direct billing? I know as a father of a diabetic child how
expensive these costs are, and for many having the cash before hand is a terrible
burden. This is yet another example of a Conservative half-measure to a serious
problem, " added MacKenzie.

It is expected that between 3000 and 5000 Nova Scotians will be eligible for this
program.
