NDP MLAs Gordie Gosse and Jerry Pye, members of the Standing Committee on Community Services, are appalled that none of the Conservative members of the committee showed up for the second day of a two-day forum on poverty, wrapping up today in Halifax.
"What does this say about the Tory commitment to ending poverty in Nova Scotia? They don't have time for it," Gosse says. "The government cannot understand what life is like for poor people if they don't show up at the best learning opportunity of the year for it." "This is disrespectful to the people and groups who made time for this forum and sends a very negative message to Nova Scotians living in poverty," says Pye.
The Standing Committee on Community Services is hosting a two-day forum on poverty, which includes presentations from individuals and groups and a round-table discussion on dealing with poverty. Friday's agenda concludes with deliberations by the Committee on material covered during the forum. Each party in government has three members on the Committee. The NDP is represented by Gosse, Pye, and Marilyn More (Dartmouth South-Portland Valley), who serves as committee chair. The Conservatives are represented by Mark Parent (Kings North), Gary Hines (Waverley-Fall River-Beaverbank), and Judy Streatch (Chester-St. Margaret's). |
