Province Appoints New Chief Medical Examiner |

Dr. Matthew Bowes has been appointed chief medical examiner for the province of Nova Scotia, Justice Minister Michael Baker announced today, Jan. 13.
"Dr. Bowes brings a great deal of expertise and professionalism to this office," said Mr. Baker. "We are extremely confident in his abilities and we are very happy that he agreed to take on this challenge."
Dr. Bowes received a medical degree from Queen's University, in Kingston, Ont., in 1998 and certification in anatomical pathology from the Royal College of Physicians of Canada in 2003.
He has been acting chief medical examiner with the province since June 1, 2005. He served as a consultant forensic pathologist with the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service beginning in July 2004.
In 2003, Dr. Bowes was associate medical examiner and a forensic pathology fellow with the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner Department in Miami, Fla.
Dr. Bowes has been involved with a number of professional organizations throughout his career. He is former president of the Professional Association of Residents in the Maritime Provinces; a member of the Canadian Association of Interns and Residents; and a fellow with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
The Medical Examiner's Office is responsible for investigating certain deaths. The types of deaths are specified in the Fatality Investigations Act. |
