Prime Minister Paul Martin has confirmed reports that one Canadian soldier has been killed and three others injured after a suicide bomber struck their military convoy in the city of Kandahar in Afghanistan. Martin offered his condolences to the soldier's families whose names will not be released until proper notification.

Several Afghan civilians were killed in the blast while more were injured according to early reports coming out of the area.

Witnesses described the blast which shattered windows in buildings close by, as being so powerful that it blew the Canadian armored vehicle completely off the road in an area just inside city limits.

The three injured Canadian soldiers were transported via air to a U.S. air base.

Violence has been steadily increasing inside the Afghanistan borders especially in the Kandahar area in which the Canadian contingeny is based. Troop levels remain at a steady 650 at this time but Canada is expected to add to those numbers by at least 2,000 in February.
