Nova Scotia Liberal Leader Francis MacKenzie is working on a plan as part of the party platform that could see mandatory protective shields in taxis within the Halifax Regional Municipality. "Legislation coupled with a provincial financial aid package might just save lives," said MacKenzie.
MacKenzie feels taxi drivers provide an important service in our society. "We have to protect them, and cost cannot be the reason why these men and women shouldn't have this protective measure," he said. On the morning of December 2005 62-year cab driver old Ken Purcell was murdered while on duty. This is the second case since October 2004. "I know cabbies face crime all the time, and many of it goes unreported. Something has to be done to help them," he said.
MacKenzie would also like to offer his help and suggestions to Halifax Mayor Peter Kelly, in trying to find a solution to this issue. "I think if everyone works together, cabbies can get the help they deserve," added MacKenzie. MacKenzie continues to consult with HRM cabbies on options available for a more secure working environment. |
