U.S. television news anchor Bob Woodruff and his camerman have been injured in Iraq while they were travelling with U.S. forces north of Baghdad.
Reports indicate that Woodruff and his cameraman, Doug Vogt who were both wearing protective body and head gear were seriously injured after a roadside bomb often referred to as an IED (improvised explosive device) exploded near their convoy. The journalists were embedded with the U.S. 4th Infantry Division.
ABC has confirmed that Woodruff and Vogt are undergoing surgery but no word has been issued regarding the specifics of their injuries. Iraq is considered to be one of the most boobytrap-infested countries in the world. Iraqi military personnel became particularly proficient in constructing booby traps and IEDs during the Iraq/Iran war in the 1980s.
Many of the IEDs are placed along U.S. military convoy routes in Iraq and are disguised in various ways including inside soda-pop cans, standard military-issued food containers and even inside dead animal carcasses. ABC News is reporting that an official military statement regarding the condition of the two journalists is expected later Sunday. |
