A former federal cabinet minister and a retired civil servant are among members of a commission named to investigate the remuneration provided elected provincial officials.

Barbara McDougall, a former federal cabinet minister and member of Parliament, will chair the Commission of Inquiry on the Remuneration of Elected Provincial Officials, Speaker of the House of Assembly Murray Scott announced today, Feb. 6.

Mr. Scott said the commission will examine the salaries and indemnities paid to members of the House of Assembly and to members of the Executive Council.

The commission also includes Gordon Gillis, a retired provincial civil servant, and George McLellan, the president and chief executive officer of Emergency Medical Care and former chief administrative officer of Halifax Regional Municipality.

Any recommendations made by the commission will not take effect until after the next general provincial election. The commission's report is due three months following that vote.

The commission is expected to start its duties within the next few weeks.
