Whalen: Nova Scotians Deserve A Winter Stat Holiday Print E-mail

Halifax Clayton Park MLA, Diana Whalen, is calling on Premier-designate Rodney MacDonald to enact Bill 195, the Joseph Howe Day Act. The Bill would create a statutory holiday on the third Monday of February.

"When I introduced the idea at this time last year, I received very positive feedback from Nova Scotians," said Whalen. "I believe that the new Premier should revisit the idea of a winter holiday. If enacted it will honour a great Nova Scotian and provide a winter break for families and workers."

Nova Scotia has the fewest statutory holidays in Canada with only five per year. Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and the three territories each have nine. New Brunswick has seven and Prince Edward Island has six.

"What better way to beat the winter blues and recharge our batteries than with a long weekend in February? I would love to see communities holding Joe Howe Day outdoor festivals in future years to celebrate the holiday," Whalen said.

Whalen sees Joe Howe Day as a way to support families in their struggle to balance their work and family responsibilities. "I believe that giving them an extra holiday may help," added Whalen.
