Provincial Wood Harvesting to be 24-Hour Operation |

There’ll soon be a buzz in the air in District 6, but the local Councillor says it won’t be music to everyone’s ears.
Councillor Andrew Younger said today that he has been advised that the Province of Nova Scotia will be harvesting Brown Spruce Longhorn Beetle-infested wood in the Lake Lamont/Topsail Watershed lands in Dartmouth, some time this week or later. The project could take up to two weeks to complete.
The watershed is surrounded by Main Street, Fader Street, Avenue du Portage, and the Caledonia Road area.
The trees are scheduled to be harvested, beginning Wednesday (February 22), under the province’s Brown Spruce Longhorn Beetle (BSLB) Zone Wood Salvage Initiative. This will be a 24- hour operation and notices have been sent to residents living within 500 meters of the property.
Councillor Younger said he appreciates the harvesting has to be done during the winter months when the beetle is dormant, but he also recognizes that sound may carry further during the winter temperatures and residents outside the harvest area may well be affected by the noise from the operation.
“It’s going to be a 24-hour operation and I realize that tree harvesters and wood chippers generate noise that might be disturbing to many residents. I am confident that the Halifax Regional Water Commission and the Province will do everything possible to minimize the noise and be respectful of area residents. This work is necessary to minimize the fire risk to the Commission and neighbouring residents from Hurricane Juan debris,” he said. |
