In a directive delivered by Deputy minister Dennis Cochrane, Education Minister Jamie Muir has ordered Halifax Regional School Board to get back to the business of educating students. Muir also warned board members he is prepared to replace them if they do not move quickly to restore public confidence.
The minister issued the troubled board with a series of directives designed to force the elected 13-member board to conduct its affairs more professionally. The directives are expected to be implemented no later than March 31st. The directives, which will become part of the board's performance standards, include implementation of a new, randomly selected seating plan, new rules on maintaining a quorum, and re-affirmation of the board's code of ethics.
Mr. Muir said he wants to see a more professional attitude from the board within the month orhe will dissolve the board and appoint someone to take over its operations on behalf of the department. |
