Dexter Calls on MacDonald to Follow N.B. Lead on HST Relief Print E-mail
Written by Leader of the Opposition
Monday, 27 March 2006
Opposition leader Darrell Dexter is calling on Premier Rodney MacDonald to take the HST off of essentials like home heating. The Nova Scotia NDP has consistently campaigned to have the HST removed from the necessities of life. This afternoon the New Brunswick government announced that it will rebate the provincial HST on electricity and heating fuel.

"Charging the HST on things people can't live without is just immoral," says Dexter. "However the Conservative government in Nova Scotia argues that there is no way to remove the tax."

"Well today another maritime Conservative premier, Bernard Lord, has tied his new proposal to the  HST. It is clearly just a matter of political will. It's good to know that the families of New Brunswick are going to benefit from common sense. Now it's up to Premier MacDonald to deliver the same kind of HST relief to Nova Scotians."

Dexter says that he would like to see the 8% provincial portion of the HST removed in Nova Scotia by a point of sale rebate, which he believes is the most immediate and cost effective way to remove the tax.

"There may be different ways to deliver the HST relief," says Dexter. "What matters is that this tax comes off the necessities of life."
