Popular recording artist Gene Pitney has been found dead in the Hilton Cardiff hotel in Wales. Pitney had just finished the first half of a UK tour and had previously displayed no signs of illness. Hours before Pitney's body was found he had performed to an enthusiastic crowd at St. David's hall in Cardiff.
Born on February 17, 1941 in Hartford, Connecticut, Pitney began his career as a songwriter penning countless hit songs including "Hello Mary Lou"and "He's A Rebel". In 1961 Pitney released his first singing single, "I Wanna Love My Life Away" followed closely by the mega-hit, "Town Without Pity".
Throughout the 1960s Pitney released more than twenty hit songs including "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", "Only Love Can Break A Heart" and "It Hurts To Be In Love". Pitney was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Cause of death has yet to be determined but officials in Wales do not suspect foul play. He is survived by his wife Lynne and three sons. |
