The news on Saturday that four Canadian soldiers have been killed as the result of a improvised explosive device (IED) attack on their vehicle brings the total number of casualties to sixteen since 2002.
The four men are reported to have been travelling in a light utility vehicle called the G-wagon in the Gumbad region when their vehicle was attacked. Three of the deceased have been identified as Lieut. William Turner of Toronto, Ont., Cpl. Matthew Dinning of Richmond Hill, Ont, and Bobmardier Myles Marshall of Victoria B.C. The fourth victim has not yet been identified.
A Canadian forces contingent has been based in a forward operating base camp in the rugged and extremely hostile Gumbad region of Afghanistan which is situated approximately 70 kilometers north of Kandahar. Canadian soldiers have been patrolling in the surrounding area in what is described as "one of the most dangerous areas in Kandahar province" according to an April 5 report by MacLeans magazine. Known as the Belly Button, the area is surrounded by inhospitable mountains where it is known that Taliban members are in hiding. Turner, Dinning and Marshall died instantly while the fourth victim died on route to hospital. |
