Acadian Liberal MLAs Wayne Gaudet and Michel Samson continue to push Minister of Health Chris d’Entremont to adopt a policy that keeps Acadians in continuing care facilities in Acadian communities.
Gaudet, as Acadian Affairs Critic, has been encouraging the government to adopt the policy since he wrote a letter to the former minister last September. In the letter he encourages the practice of placing Francophone Nova Scotians in French-speaking facilities. “It is important that individuals can communicate in their own language, particularly those requiring care on a daily basis,” says Gaudet. “It is traumatic to be taken out of your community and placed in a facility far from family and friends.” Samson believes this is an important issue that must be immediately addressed by the Conservative government.
“This is an issue that affects people in every Acadian community in Nova Scotia,” says Samson. “It is unacceptable to continue the practice for moving Acadians into environments where they cannot communicate and enjoy the same quality of life as English-speaking residents.” Both Gaudet and Samson believe that a correction of this situation would be an important step in ensuring the cultural and linguistic vitality of the Acadian people of Nova Scotia. |
