The Conservative government’s agreement with Stora Enso does nothing to address the long-term sustainability of the company, says Richmond Liberal MLA Michel Samson.
The government announced today it is providing $65 million dollars to Stora over seven years, provided it remains in business. The money is available after the mill has been back in operation for 12 months. “This deal does nothing to address the long-term sustainability of the company,” says Samson. “The company told the government over a month ago it needed assistance on its tax bill, high power rates and labour costs. This agreement does none of that.”
Samson is troubled by the misleading impression this agreement leaves and also questions the timing of the agreement. “The Conservatives are giving false hope to the people of the Strait. The money sounds great but does little for the long-term needs of Stora,” says Samson. “This is nothing more than an attempt to buy votes just before an election,” says Samson. “The Conservatives are waving a carrot but we can’t have a bite until after the election.” |
