Dumb Thought On The Nova Scotia Election Trail Print E-mail
Written by Editor

Today's dumb thought was inspired by Premier Rodney MacDonald. During a rare appearance this morning, on a live radio station, Premier MacDonald was questioned by News 95.7 host Andrew Krystal about Sunday shopping.

MacDonald indicated there might be another plebiscite on Sunday shopping during the next Municipal Election, if he's reelected as premier. He also qualified that by saying the question has to be a clear Yes or No.

We agree, if a Conservative government doesn't have the balls to allow shop owners to decide when to open for business, then they should, at the very least, allow a straight forward question to be included in any plebiscite on the issue.

As for our "Dumb Thought On The Election Trail" - Last week Premier Rodney MacDonald told reporters that he's all for Sunday shopping on the six Sundays before Christmas.

Which brings us back to the possibility of a clear Yes or No question. Could this possibly be the next question on the Sunday shopping plebiscite?

Should there be Sunday shopping?

__ no
__Yes, on only the six Sundays immediately before Christmas?

Based on the Premier's response to the question, it's the only multiple choice question that fits.

You may recall the first plebiscite question on Sunday shopping?

Allow me to refresh your memory then.

The ballot reads as follows:
Please note that if there is to be Sunday shopping

(a) it would only be from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; and
(b) it would not be on New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, July 1st, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

Please answer both questions.

1. Should there be Sunday shopping (in retail businesses not now permitted to be open on Sunday)?

__ yes
__ no

2. If there is to be Sunday shopping (in retail businesses not now permitted to be open on Sunday), should it be

__ on every Sunday (except as noted above)?
__ on only the six Sundays immediately before Christmas?
