There are tons of topics to write and talk about. Where, oh where do we start? How about the ‘Sensations’ Strip club issue? Why doesn’t Javis Roberts get it? Roberts, who seems to be defying or getting ready to defy the URB (Utilities and Review Board). This board recently ruled that the club can have an alcohol permit but terminated its adult entertainment. Roberts is not pleased and now has no problem is trying or is that crying his side of the story. This guy ran away from the media when he opened his club in January. He wouldn’t comment on the club being in a residential neighbourhood and for the most part didn’t want anything to do with the issue in so far as talking to the media is concerned.
Now, the man is everywhere since he got that unfavourable decision. I see him on TV (ATV), and maybe the other stations had him, I caught him on the 95.7 Maritime Morning open line talk show with Andrew Krystal Friday morning. In fact he phoned in to that one and then he was on the Rick (Hotline) Howe show later that day. I expect him to make an appearance on Cross Country check up with Rex Murphy and then take it to the limit with an appearance on Larry King live or at least an interview with Steve Murphy or Norma Lee. He seems ready to try and defy the rules and wants sympathy. He has the right to many things and a lot of what he says is true but I call it tainted. For example, he says his club has been there for over 30 years and he is right, totally right. But it was called ‘Little Nashville” and it catered to a country music crowd, not a crowd that wants to see some hot broads ‘take it off, or take it all (or most of it) off.’ I never heard that in either radio interviews. Next, he talks about the renovations and the money he spent on making the club nice but again Roberts fails to mention that people in the area protested his club, his ideas, and his renovations from the beginning. As soon as the area heard the country music club was going to be a Peeler joint, they started to complain but old Javis simply wasn’t listening. He should have. At no time is this ever mentioned by Roberts. Yes, legally he has some points but neglects to discuss why the URB made their decision. “They are trying to legislate morality,” is a phrase I am hearing. In a way, maybe so, but while Roberts has some valid points, so do the neighbours and that neighbourhood is full of kids. Those kids, and their moms and dad are entitled to ‘quiet enjoyment of their space’ and that to me is the major overriding issue and the one Javis Roberts seems oblivious to. What’s more important one strip club or a neighbourhood? Most will side with the neighbours. Bottom line, move your club Mr. Roberts. It doesn’t belong there and never did. Go to Burnside, find a place near Ralph’s but it doesn’t belong in that neighbourhood. Yes, you spent a lot of money renovating the club but you were warned from day one. I for one applaud the URB decision. Take your peeler club and shove it to where it belongs. It doesn’t belong at that location. I took in the announcement a week ago at province house when Rodney MacDonald called the election. I agree with Lisa Blackburn and her column in the Daily News who doesn’t seem to know what this man who is premier stands for. Since I put out a high school paper (IMPACT) I asked him what are his plans for these first time voters who are aphetic, cynical and don’t care about politics? “We will try to get them involved,” was his answer. He didn’t say how. I really don’t know what this guy stands for and the only emotion that came out at this launch was when someone stated that the PC’s ‘Took their budget ideas from the NDP especially on home heating tax breaks’. He didn’t like the question. What does he expect? His government basically laughed at the NDP home heat idea tax rebate idea, and yes, the PC’s have taken it. It would be easier for him to say, “Yes, the NDP had a good idea and we have borrowed it.” Would it kill someone to say that? Most of the time, when a person is running for the premier’s job, they talk about their accomplishments as a cabinet minister but he doesn’t. Seems he doesn’t have a glowing record in his portfolios of tourism and immigration. He is still thought of in a negative way for his dismantling of the arts council. Following politics since 1957, which is when Louis St. Laurent was Prime Minister I, like so many others, are getting fed up with these guys. From Gomery to the likes of David Emerson (he who switched parties from Liberals to PC right after the last federal election) I understand why so many are turned off. Like many people in this province I think MacDonald or anyone else who brings down what appears to be a favourable budget and doesn’t act on it simply drives suspicion. It also didn’t help when he said he would bring in, if elected a premier, a budget ‘similar’ in nature. Why not pass the budget? That is what many are saying. It’s one thing for a media person like me to make a comment but he was attacked by his own Tory followers on the campaign trail. But he is young, good looking, dresses very well and sharp and could conjure up visions of a youthful looking John Kennedy. But is it all gloss and no substance. Carla Peeler once stated the famous line in the 80’s, ‘Where’s the beef’? Many of us are saying the same thing about a man who wants the top job in the province.
