Halifax principal Mary-Lou Donnelly has been re-elected president of the 10,600-member Nova Scotia Teachers Union. Her second two-year term of office begins August 1.
Donnelly was declared elected Tuesday following the counting of ballots cast at schools and community college campuses throughout the province on Monday, May 29. Donnelly defeated her only opponent, Halifax junior high school teacher Rene Gallant. A teacher for 25 years, Donnelly was principal of St. Patrick's-Alexandra School when first elected in 2004. Prior to that she served as vice-principal of Sir John A. MacDonald High School for four years. She has taught at the elementary, junior high and senior high level, teaching core French, French immersion, English and German. She served as second vice-president of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union from May 2002 until May of 2004, and was first elected a provincial executive member representing the Halifax City Local in 2000. She is currently a vice-president of the Canadian Teachers' Federation.
Donnelly holds a BA from Acadia University, a BEd from Dalhousie University and a MA in Education from Saint Mary's University. She is married to Chebucto Heights Elementary School principal Ed Donnelly. They have four children. Donnelly is the fifth woman to hold the top post of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union since its inception in 1895 and the third teacher and first women elected to the position through universal suffrage. |
