Council of Canadians To PM Harper: No More Than a Birthday Card for U.S. President Bush Print E-mail

On Thursday July 6, U.S. President George W. Bush will celebtare his 60th birthday and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper will be in attendance to cheer the president on as he attempts to blow out 60 candles. But the pressing question on many Canadian's minds is what does one give to someone who literally has everything including the position of self-described leader of the free world?

With possible gift suggestions ranging from either the province of Newfoundland or oil-rich Alberta to the more mundane hockey gear and fishing rods, Maude Barlow of the Council of Canadians has a better - and less costly idea.

Barlow will be throwing the American president a birthday party in front of the Prime Minister's Office to request that Stephen Harper limit his generosity to a card and good wishes during his trip to Washington on the 6th.

The Council of Canadians fear that Harper will further compromise Canadian sovereignty in areas of foreign policy, trade and security and hopes to raise awareness about how much Harper has already sacrificed without public consent during his short reign.

Barlow who is the National Chairperson of the citizen's advocacy organization, The Council of Canadians was a 2005 nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize and is the recipient of the "Cultural Freedom Fellowship" given by the Lannan Foundation and most recently the "Right Livelihood Award". She has penned fourteen books her lateste being a study of social and economic impacts of Canada's ties with the United States titled, Too Close For Comfort: Canada's Future Within Fortress North America.

The Presidential birthday bash will be held outside the prime minister's office in Ottawa beginning at 1pm on Thursday, July 6. Cake will be served.
