Following North Korea's instant rejection of the unanimous UN Security Council resolution, a spokesperson for the North Korean Foreign Ministry warned that his country will continue to "bolster its war deterrent" as a way of defending itself against the United States.
North Korea has also issued a stark warning to the rest of the world that UN imposed sanctions would be considered a "prelude to the provocation of the second Korean War." That country's Foreign Ministry questioned the fairness of nations like the U.S. being allowed to defend themselves while North Korea is denounced for doing the same thing. The UN Security Council on Saturday unanimously approved a resolution against North Korea which condemns that country's ballistic missile testing and demands an end to missile test launches. The resolution demands that all UN member states exercise vigilance and prevent missile and missile-related items, materials, goods and technology being transferred to or procured from DPRK's missile or WMD programmes. The Council also demands that North Korea abandon all nuclear ambitions.
The UN resolution is in response to the July 5 launch by North Korea of seven test missiles, one of which is believed to have the potential of reaching U.S. or Canadian soil. The long-range Taepodong-2 failed within minutes of launch. The UN member states are also insisting that North Korea return immediately to the Six-Party Talks without precondition and to return to the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards. |
