RU2 950The Cole Harbour detachment of the RCMP will soon be equipped with a brand new traffic speed monitoring system in an effort to slow down speeders in the Cole Harbour and surrounding areas policed by the RCMP. Funds have been made available for the unit from District Capital Funds, District 4 Cole Harbour and allocated by HRM Councillors Harry McInroy, Bill Karsten, Becky Kent and David Hendsbee.

The RU2 Fast 950 Radar Speed Display Trailer will enable RCMP to track and record the speed of vehicles in the Cole Harbour and surrounding areas including Lawrencetown and the Prestons.

The RU2 units which are manufactured in Arizona stand 7 feet tall when fully erected. The 18 inch tall LED violator alert system has the capability of displaying a message to drivers who are operating their vehicles over the posted speed limit. When a speeding vehicle is noted, the LED display will flash a warning message of "HEY, SLOW DOWN" and will also flash a strip of red and blue LED's when the approaching vehicle does not slow to the selected speed.

The addition of the RU2 unit is in response to an increasing amount of complaints from the public about speeding in the area. Along with speed monitoring the unit will also be utilized by the RCMP for various traffic surveys as a way of determining future speed controls and the appropriate signage and enforcement.
